7 Simple Ways to Keep Flowers Fresh Longer at Home
Preserve flowers longer
Avoid placing fruits like apples, bananas, or tomatoes next to flowers. These fruits produce a lot of ethylene gas that causes flowers to wilt faster.

Add sugar, lemon, and household cleaner to the water
If you can’t buy flower food packets, you can make a nutrient mixture with sugar, lemon, and household cleaner and add it to the water in the vase.
Sugar provides nutrients for the flowers, lemon juice helps the stems absorb water better, and the cleaner reduces bacteria and mold. You can also substitute lemon with a coin.
Use hairspray
You can enjoy your flowers for a little longer by spraying a thin layer of hairspray on them. However, don’t spray too much and spray from a distance to avoid damaging the petals.

Keep flowers away from appliances
Brad Weinstein, who works at a flower company in Dallas, Texas (USA), advises not to place flower vases near heating vents or doorways. Devices like TVs and heaters emit heat, which can cause the flowers to wilt quickly.

The company conducted experiments showing that keeping flowers in the refrigerator overnight helps them stay fresh longer. So, if you want to preserve flowers, you can try this method.
Trim flower stems at an angle
Regularly cutting flower stems at a sharp angle helps increase the surface area in contact with water, allowing the flowers to absorb more water. If cut straight, the stems will absorb less water because of the smaller contact area and the stems touching the bottom of the vase.

Additionally, you should regularly check the water level in the vase and add more water to avoid leaving the vase completely dry, as the flowers will wilt quickly.
Clean the vase with water and cleaner
Don’t rush to take the vase out of the cabinet and pour water directly into it. Thoroughly clean the flower vase with soap or cleaner to disinfect it. With fewer bacteria, your flowers will stay fresh longer.
Don’t wipe dry the flower vase
After cleaning the flower vase, instead of using a towel to dry it, you just need to turn the vase upside down and let it dry naturally, preventing bacteria from entering the inside of the vase.
